Types of Competition

Rec

Recreational soccer is designed for players who want to enjoy the sport in a less competitive and more relaxed environment. It focuses on player development, team building, and fun rather than intense competition. Rec leagues typically have lower fees and are organized at the local level. Examples of Rec soccer leagues in the US include AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) and SYSL(Suburban Youth Soccer League).

Travel soccer offers a more competitive experience for players who are looking to enhance their skills and compete against teams from different areas. Travel teams require players to try out and are typically more selective in their player recruitment. They often participate in regional and statewide competitions and tournaments. Travel soccer generally involves more training sessions and higher fees compared to Rec soccer. Various leagues exist for travel soccer, such as the US Youth Soccer National League, Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), and MLS Next.

National competition opportunities in the US are generally reserved for the highest level of youth soccer and certain travel clubs. These competitions involve the most elite clubs and teams from across the country and often require qualification through regional competitions. State-level leagues vary from state to state and may have different names, such as Cal North in California, VYSA (Virginia Youth Soccer Association) in Virginia, or MNJYSA and SJSL in New Jersey .

Regional leagues encompass multiple states or larger geographic areas. These leagues provide higher-level competition beyond the state level and attract teams from a wider range of locations. Regional leagues typically have multiple divisions, including premier divisions for top-tier teams and lower divisions for teams at various skill levels. Examples of regional leagues include the Midwest Regional League (MRL) and the New England Premiership (NEP).

National Leagues

National leagues are among the most competitive and prestigious travel leagues in club soccer. These leagues bring together top teams from across the country to compete against each other. National leagues often have strict entry criteria and require teams to qualify through regional competitions or by invitation. They provide a platform for elite players to showcase their skills and attract attention from college recruiters and professional scouts. The US Youth Soccer National League and the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) are prominent examples of national leagues in the United States. The two largest governing bodies for competitive soccer in the United States – United States Youth Soccer (USYS) and United States Club Soccer (US Club).
